Goodbye Lipstick, Hello Bailout!

The general election started out as the democratic primaries ended: Experience vs. Change. Then, all of a sudden, John McCain decided that if he was going to win this election he would need to be “Reform” and he would have to completely sell out his soul and the little honor that he had left. He makes a deft and purely calculated political decision picking a nobody Gov. of Alaska and painting her as Jr. Ms. Maverick. The Right was energized by this off-the-cliff right wing nut being chosen. “Finally a reason to vote for McCain!” They said. Then the RNC happened. The word liberal was thrown around by everyone and the President even called out the “Liberal Left!” The Culture War and the ridiculous mind bending spin has begun!!
Asking legitimate questions of Palin’s experience? SEXIST LIBERAL! Questioning her crumbling so-called “Maverick” record? HOW DARE YOU “DISMISS” THIS WOMAN! Questioning John McCain’s judgment? HOW DARE YOU QUESTION HIS JUDGMENT, HE WAS A POW!! Troopergate? You said you would participate, but now it is partisan? LIBERAL ELITE MEDIA!! But why can’t the press just ask her some questions? THE PRESS CAN ASK HER QUESTIONS WHEN THEY SHOW HER SOME “DEFERENCE”! But he was talking about McCain’s ideas. HE WAS CALLING SARAH PALIN A PIG! But it was in order to teach kids about pedophiles. HE WANTS TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT SEX BEFORE THEY LEARN TO READ!
This was the plan. This was the way to win. Let’s not talk about the issues. There is only 8 weeks left. We can stick it out. We can paint Obama so far left and radical that the issues won’t even matter. Then September 15th happened and McCain said, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.”
That was it. The garabge that had been manipulating the media was over and the election became about the issues. Not just any issue, but the biggest crisis since 9/11 and the worst economic crises since the Great Depression. McCain acted frantic. He lashed out at Wall St., yet he helped deregulate them. He was against a bailout, for it, against it for AIG, for it. McCain became an angry populist and not a 26 year “fundamental deregulater.”
Barack Obama? Cool as the other side of the pillow. He showed patience, met with top economic advisors, many of which ex-Clinton advisors. He laid out the parameters of a plan, but showed prudence by not jumping to conclusions until actually seeing the details of the White House plan. All the while, John McCain yelled at him like an angry old neighbor scolding you for your “loud music.” One man acted like he had the experience to face a crises, the other acted like a panicked neophyte.
Over last week Obama went from down 3 in gallup to up 6 (it has leveled off to a 3-4 point lead). States began shifting back to Obama. The Palin bubble popped with growing questions of troopergate and numerous findings showing her stump speech contained many lies. Lies which she repeated over and over again (You know, she said, “Thanks but no thanks!”). The media began pushing back for getting no access with her and in the straight out lies many McCain ads contained.
If all of this started putting some nails in McCain’s coffin then surely this story breaking today does:

The Newsweek article sums up the story nicely. There goes that maverick reformer garbage. McCain’s campaign and campaign manager, Rick Davis, and even John McCain himself have been lying as to whether Davis has had contact with Freddie Mac. He was getting 15K a month from 2006 up until last month. Davis sought out the job in 2006 and got it primarily because he was McCain’s manager and Freddie Mac wanted to be able to have a friend so close to him. In other words, Freddie Mac figured, “We’ll have a lobbyist as White House Chief of Staff!” What this says to us is that McCain’s act is just that, an act. As President he would be in bed with lobbyists and big corporate interests.
If anything these last 10 days or so only amplify Obama’s newest line: ENOUGH.
