Racism in the wake of the historic election

A common charge against police in the inner city is that they are unapologetically racist. Not just white cops, but all types cops engage in this racism.

With the election of an African-American into the White House, I, like others, thought that this racism was on the downward trend. Regrettably it is not.

Both of my brothers are cops, while fitting for a tux at his wedding and the inevitable waiting around for the 6 year old ring bearer to try on his tux my brother, as he always does, breaks out his cell phone to show the things that people sent him.

Usually either one would show me a collection of fart jokes, naked women, or pictures of cartoons having sex with each other. The locker room humor of high school defiantly lives on in the locker room of the precinct house.

On this day however all of the text messages he showed me kind of shook me to my core. I found myself grinning not to feel out of place, like a Jew at a Hitler youth camp.

The first text passed around apparently had been disseminated to a mass audience not just the police. It stated

Attention: All White People report to the cotton fields at 9:00AM

It wasn’t so bad, white people are scared that Obama is going to do what almost every white person has done in power and help oppress anyone who is not like him, I get it.

The second message shook me to my core; it was entitled Obama’s acceptance speech. It featured an audio clip of Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream” speech followed by an abrupt gunshot.

We have a habit in this generation to laugh at things that are so bad that they are funny, but when does so bad that its funny just become bad?
